What is it?

The Emerald Test

Inter-Laboratory Comparison and Proficiency Test for Cannabis Testing Labs

The Emerald Test™ is an Inter-Laboratory Comparison and Proficiency Test (ILC/PT) program for cannabis testing labs. It brings to the cannabis industry a well-established standard for testing in the environmental, food, pharmaceutical, water, and petrochemical testing industries. Through the participation of labs around the world, the ILC/PT helps establish an industry benchmark for cannabis testing.

State regulatory agencies use proficiency testing (PT) programs for laboratory licensure and compliance to promote accurate testing for cannabis quality and safety.

The Emerald Test™ is offered twice each year (though individual PT’s are always available).

How it works

The Emerald Test™ takes place in the Spring and Fall of each year, with enrollment open for a set period of time. The components of each test are determined by the Emerald Test Advisory Panel. When possible, proficiency test samples are manufactured by an ISO 17043 accredited PT provider and require overnight shipping. After receiving and testing the sample, labs have a specified time period to complete the test(s) and submit their results. Results are submitted through an electronic data portal. Data analysis is provided by American Oil Chemists Society (AOCS) with software designed to meet the requirements of ISO 13528:2015.

Labs will receive their individual results with the overall test results so they can evaluate their performance in relation to their peers. Individual lab data is confidential; however cumulative (anonymous) data of all laboratory participants is used for a variety of analyses and may be published in appropriate journals and/or websites. Labs that perform within a specific tolerance are awarded Emerald Test Badges. All participants will be listed on this site.

A signed release of information from the lab is required to make test results available to regulatory agencies.

Fall 2017 Test

Enrollment for the Fall 2017 Test begins Monday, September 25. Purchasing any of the Emerald Tests™ automatically enrolls the lab in the program. All tests require Overnight Shipping, which is included in the price of the test.

The Fall 2017 Emerald Test™ offers a broad range of PTs to meet a laboratory’s internal and regulatory needs.

The Badge

An Emerald Badge will be issued to top performing labs.

In previous rounds of The Emerald Test™, badge criteria were based on participant Z scores. To improve and simplify the award process, criteria for quantitative analyses will be based on percent variation of reported values versus the reference value. By default, the reference value will be the certified value reported by the ISO-certified manufacturers; but in cases where the certified value differs from the consensus mean by > 25%, the consensus mean may be used at the discretion of the Advisory Panel. Allowed percent variation from a reference value are based on group results from past tests as well as industry standard values for related tests in established industries. Allowed percent variation may change between rounds of The Emerald Test™.

Advisory Panel

The Emerald Test™ Advisory Panel defines the content of each test and the terms for data analysis as well as the criteria for receiving the Emerald Test™ Badge.  The 2017 advisory panelists are:
